They Can't Eat You

Go Daddy Super Bowl Ad
Bob Parsons, the founder of Go Daddy, has some interesting rules.

  • He's also a conspiracy-theory loving control freak. He's a master of twisting things around to fit his perspective, doesn't have much respect for process (due or otherwise--he appears to believe equally in preemptive strikes and preemptive pardons), and comes across in his blog alternately as a proponent of extreme free-market economics or as a closet totalitarian. I pulled my last GoDaddy-registered domain after he spammed me back in April and included the meaningless and erroneous phrase "privacy as guaranteed by the United States Constitution" among a lot of other paranoid rhetoric. He sounds libertarian at first bark, but when you read deeper something else emerges, something darker than just the bald fact of being a shameless self-promoter and blowhard.

  • Have you found a cheaper registrar or is it just the principle of the thing?

  • I started switching to 1and1.com about two years ago and have everything over there now. I've been really happy with that. I'm still on that "three years free" hosting (Linux) deal they advertised in Wired back then, so I've only been paying for domain registrations ($5.99/year), not hosting. But like most places you don't have to buy hosting to do domain registration and parking/forwarding. The only catch so far has been that domain forwarding for non-hosted domains is always cloaked--with a hidden frame--not redirected, so you have to use a frame-breaker script if you care about the URL (title, meta tags, etc.) in the browser being real on the destination pages.
